Listen to a previous podcast featuring Marc Psaltis on "How to Choose the Right Motor for Your Severe Duty Applications".

Mike Murphy:

Welcome to another episode of The ABB Solutions Podcast, where we talk with experts on solving problems facing the industry. I'm your host, Mike Murphy. Speaking you from Greenville, South Carolina. I asked Shelley Gager. Global Segment Manager for general industries to help answer the question on moving from a general purpose motor, or standard duty, to a severe duty motor, such as the Baldor-Reliance XT motor. Okay, so Shelley, I'm in the Baldor- Reliance 501 catalogue, which I'm sure our listeners have on their desks. And there's a huge general purpose motor section. But then there's also a pretty big, severe duty motor section as well. So can you talk me through when would I move from a general purpose motor to a severe duty motor?

Shelley Gager:

Yeah, that's a great question. Mike, we often have that exact question for many of our customers. When do I make that transition? And when is it right for me in my application. And it truly is that application or environment type decisions. So if you think about where applications reside, motors can be anywhere. And motors,, they're indoors in a relatively clean environment, they don't really need to have a lot of additional mechanical features, to give them protection against dust, dirt, water, those types of environmental debris, if you will. So when you think of it that way, we often talk through Ingress Protection. So IP ratings of motors. And many motors have that on the nameplate or at least in the literature. And there's different grades of IP, so Ingress Protection, you know, open motors, or IP 22, an open frame, motor, dust and dirt and everything can get inside, but everything inside is protected to a degree. And so it's a 2 for dust and a 2 for water. That's pretty common. When you move up into a cast iron motor, that's going to be TEFC, Totally Enclosed, Fan Cooled, you can see IP 44. So immediately, you see the numbers going up - better protection. And so we've historically, then offered an IP 55. And that's more protection yet. But some customers don't need to go all the way to 55. You know, when they move that motor, or that application, now is focused outdoors, you get outdoor dust, dirt, debris. Something a little bit different than indoor in a more controlled environment. But you go outdoors where there's potentially more water, snow, rain, those types of things, depending on what's in your environment. So you need to have that in-between option. So you're not overpaying. And you're getting what you need. So we came out with a new product last year in our XT product offering that fills our portfolio from IP 44 in general purpose to IP 54 in XT, and then the continuation in our severe duty family 55, 56. And there on.

Mike Murphy:

Okay, great. So when again, did we launch this XT product?

Shelley Gager:

Yeah, so we just launched it last year, in 2021. And it's been really taking off on our distributor shelves and really being an excellent solution again, to fill that void between general purpose and severe duty.

Mike Murphy:

Okay, I know the general purpose is that famous Baldor gold looking color? Is there an indicator, you know, oh, that's yeah, that's a Baldor-Reliance XT motor? How would I know?

Shelley Gager:

We'd love to have colors on motors and really draw attention and these motors are going to be black. So when they come out of the cardboard box that you're gonna see him right, come out with a nice, flat black paint and they look pretty sharp on applications, if I do say myself.

Mike Murphy:

All right, very good. Okay, and remember, if you'd like more information on any of our color of motors, contact your local sales representative or visit us at www.abb.com, and then under the product tab, select motors and generators.
